Parrot, a global leader in wireless devices for smartphones and in-car services, was founded in 1994 by Henry Seydoux by his motivation in implementing the breakthrough of mobile phones into everyday life by creating such devices for a life of ease. It has produced considerable hands-free systems for cars and is also an expert in mobile connectivity and media regarding Smartphones, which it is globally renowned for.
During the course of its success, Parrot has expanded to the market of UAVs with the production of various drones including the Parrot AR.Drone which was the first quadricopter to be controlled and piloted by WiFi and implemented UAV’s to new personal and professional uses.
Parrot is now coming out with the new Parrot Minidrone, Rolling Spider, in August 2014 along with another Minidrone, Jumping Sumo. Rolling spider is a compact drone which is controlled by a smartphone and flies both indoors and outdoors with quite speed and stability. The user controls the drone through the FreeFlight 3 application on his/her smartphone, connecting with the Rolling Spider by the use of Bluetooth. The Minidrone can perform precise turns and even 360⁰ flips. A fun feature of the Rolling Spider is that you can throw it up in the air and it can take off for flight just like that. It is equipped with a pressure sensor to judge the flight altitude and an Ultrasonic sensor used near the ground for precision flying. It also has a vertical camera which the drone uses to reposition itself according to the ground. The drone is available in 3 different colors and sticker customization.
A special feature to the Rolling Spider, other than its capabilities as a compact drone, is the attachment of removable wheels. With them, the Rolling spider can dash on the floor, the walls and even on the ceiling. However, the only major setback to this otherwise amazingly fun drone is the battery life. The battery only last 8 minutes in aerial use and 6 minutes with the wheels attached, and the Lithium-Polymer battery recharges to full in exactly one hour.
You can preorder from the Apple store.
The Rolling spider cost $99, and the Jumping Sumo cost $159.95
