One of very few no-contact wellness monitors on the market, the S+ sleep monitor by ResMed offers you an opportunity to gather comprehensive information about your individualized sleep patterns and offers suggestions for how to improve sleep quality.
Our first concern here at TechPicks was how the device is able to track sleep patterns without harming the user over time. As explained on the website:
“The S+ measures movements using very low power radio waves (less than 1/10 of Bluetooth®). The basic principle is similar to the echolocation system used by bats to hunt insects. The S+ transmits a short pulse of radio waves at 10.5 GHz and then listens for the echo of the pulse. As you move, the phase of the echo changes, and this is converted into a signal that reflects your movement.”
In a nutshell, the low power radio waves track breathing and movement throughout the night and are surprisingly accurate in judging whether the person is awake, in light sleep, deep sleep, or REM sleep. The S+ takes into consideration the duration of each sleep stage, time the tracking began, time it takes to get to light sleep, and wake time in order to develop a personalized report of sleep quality for one night. It provides an overall sleep score and a sleep score for each individual sleep stage based on age and reported lifestyle.
Helps you get to sleep easier:
Soothing sounds that synchronize with breathing and gradually slow down to create a rhythm that promotes relaxation and falling asleep more easily. This feature was very helpful creating a relaxing ambiance. Sounds are repetitive and monotone so that they do not provide additional stimulation, but soothe the sleeper even after a particularly stressful day.
Allows you to jot down quick notes using voice or text to help take that to-do list off your mind until the next day. This feature was designed to ensure you don’t have to get out of bed when you’ve already gotten comfortable. It also prompts you to take a moment to clear your mind before closing your eyes.
Analyzes sleep environment:
Provides personalized, daily sleep scores using a bar graph and pie chart that measure the duration of each sleep stage and number of sleep cycles, as well as number of disruptions throughout the evening. Then gives a breakdown of average scores for your age and gender and offers daily suggestions to improve sleep quality based on sleep pattern, bedroom environment and reported daily habits such as caffeine and alcohol consumption, stress levels, and amount of exercise.
